Use these tips to help you in decluttering your master closet and get it organized. Make your master closet super functional!
Do you have that secret place in your home that you don’t let anyone see or go into? I did! My master closet was the place in my home that was cluttered and disorganized. I kept the door closed at all times.
It was the collector of stuff. Old clothes, kids clothes, blankets galore and anything else that I wasn’t sure where to store in my home went into the master closet.
When you have to move multiple items to find the one thing you are looking for that’s the sign you need to declutter your space. That was the point I had reached in my master closet.
It was time to tackle the one place in my home that I had been dreading cleaning out and organizing.
This was going to be a big job. I cleared a whole Sunday to get the job done. Using the tools from a recent online home organization course I had taken, I began the process.

1) Take Everything Out
Seems simple. Remove every item from the space. This step is where things get super messy before it gets better.
During this process my master bedroom looked like a disaster. I began to question why I was doing this! As a result, I took a few minutes to freak out about the massive mess and then pressed on with this first step to an organized master closet.
2) Group Into Categories
As you are removing items from your closet group them into categories.
My bed was full of clothing and a pile of linens. I had all shoes on the floor in a pile. Any type of bag or luggage was grouped together.
I placed jewelry and scarves on my dresser. Gift wrapping and party supplies were together on the floor.
Grouping items into categories helps you see just how much of an item you have. This can help you know where you can declutter first.
3) Purge, Purge, Purge
The elimination process now starts. We don’t want to return every item to our closet that we just took out. The goal is to create a decluttered and organized space.
In Abby Lawson’s course Impactful Habits, Organized Homes she shares the process of how to best declutter a space.
You must be willing to get rid of items. Designate a spot for “trash” , a spot for “donate” items and a spot for “sell” items. These are all items that will not be returning to your closet or any other space in your home.
Now is the time to go through each categorized pile and begin to eliminate items.
I think clothing is the toughest item to declutter. I had been hanging onto my Senior prom dress from high school. The dress still fit and held sentimental value to me. But I finally decided I didn’t need to keep an item I would never actually wear again. The dress will live on in photos. 20 years later my prom dress went into the donate pile.
4) Relocate Items
After purging items you are now left with only the things you truly want to keep. Some items in your master closet may not actually belong there.
I had been storing baby clothes that my daughter had grown out of in my master closet. These are clothes that I don’t need anymore but am saving to give to my sister. Relocating them to a bin in the garage was a better place.
I was also storing art supplies in my master closet. I decided to move these art items to our kitchen cabinets with other art supplies already there.
Look through your categorized piles and decide if you could relocate any items to a different space in your home.
5) Clean & Organize
The master closet is completely empty. You probably haven’t seen the floor of your closet since moving in!
Before moving anyting back into the closet it’s time to clean the space.
- dust and wipe down any shelves.
- dust the walls and any cobwebs
- wipe down the clothing rods
- vacuum the floor
With a freshly cleaned master closet you can now begin to put items back in.
Organizing Your Master Closet
Start with your hanging clothes. Arrange them by shirts, sweaters, blouses, pants, jeans, and dresses.
If you need help in pairing down your clothing items Abby’s course Impactful Habits, Organized Home has a whole section dedicated to clothing!
Next bring in your shoes. I have my shoes in a hanging organizer. This keeps them from taking up a lot of floor space by using vertical space.
Keep scarves and belts organized and untangled using a metal hook hanger. I have my scarves on an S hook. They are also useful for organizing purses and bags.
If you still need more space to organize clothing consider a hanging closet organizer system. I use one to store my toddlers clothing in as she does not have a dresser.
Gift bags and gift wrapping can be placed in a clear tub with lid.
I store our bed linens in our master closet along with a few throw blankets. They only take up one shelf in our closet. If you don’t have a shelf available consider using a pretty storage basket.
