Organized Kids Closet With Cube Storage

We recently moved into a new home and the kids bedroom closet spaces are smaller than what we had in our previous home. The first 2 months the toys lived in the boxes I packed them in. Keeping the shared girls room tidy was almost impossible.

As you can see in the photos their closet was just a toy explotion! The plastic organizers were to small and did not contain the toys.

After some Google and Pinterest searching I decided on organizing the kids closet with cube storage. It seemed to be the best way to utilize the small closet space.

Measure the space.

The first step was to measure the length and depth of the closet. I wanted to make sure to pick the best sized cube shelving for the closet.

I chose an 8 cube organizing shelf and a 6 cube organizing shelf for the space. This would allow me to maximize the floor space in the closet and add vertical storage by making an “L” shape with the cube storage units.

Take everything out of the space.

Following the steps I’ve learned from my friend Abby’s online course Impactful Habits Organized Home, I took everything out of the space and started with a blank space.

Declutter and remove trash.

The next step was to go through all the toys! Even though I had gotten rid of toys before the move there were still more items that could go.

I chose toys to donate and threw away any broken toys or toys with missing peices.

Vacuum and wipe down.

While the closet was empty I did a quick clean of the space. Wiping down the shelf and baseboards and vacuuming the carpet.

TIP: Taking the doors off of the closet will help with ease of placing in the shelving!

Install cube organizing shelf

My husband was incharge of assembling the cube storage organizers. After assembly I placed them into the kids closet. The 8 shelf unit went on the bottom and I placed the 6 shelf unit vertically ontop.

Make sure to secure shelving to the wall if you’re stacking! You don’t want shelving falling down ontop of kiddos!

Fill the cube organizer!

Now for the best part, filling those cubes! I filled the bins with toys by type. Also I thought about the easy access of my toddlers toys and made sure to keep those toys in the bottom bins. We have seperate bins for Barbies, Barbie accesories, Frozen, Legos and more.

I found a set of 6 storage cubes on Amazon for a much better price than the cubes sold at Target. There were many color choices making it easy to match with the girls room.

Label the storage cubes.

The part that will make this cube storage organization succesful is labeling the bins! If your child can read then you could add name lables. For littles use pictures lables.

I easily made picture lables for all my bins on a free website called Canva. It’s pretty simple to use! I found images of all our toys with a quick Google search. I personaly like picture lables for bigger kids too.

After printing, I laminated the lables to make them durable. Then I cut the lables out. Using glue dots I attached the lables to each cube.

Having the bins labled makes clean-up super simple. Kids can be empowered to keep their space picked up since they know exactly where toys belong. It’s also great when friends come over to play. They can help your kiddo clean-up and get toys into the corect bin!
