Kids thrive on routines and structure. They like to know what’s happening each day. Set up your kids daily routine and watch them take responsibility for their day!
Time management for kids is mostly done by the parent. When they are babies we make sure they get dressed each morning and feed them breakfast. Playtime and reading books is a large part of their toddler days. Next school takes up a big chunk of their days.
As kids get older they start to pay more attention to the routines of their days. Kids notice if a snack time has been skipped. They notice if Mom hasn’t arrived to pick them up from preschool yet.
They are becoming aware of routines and schedules of their day even if they are not the ones in charge of planning their days.
Do your kids need to take more responsibility for their daily routine? Are you ready to pass the baton of time management over to your kids?
With the school year starting up again I thought about how I could give my kids more control over their school day and feel like they have a part in the planning.
This Daily Routine and Schedule for kids can be used for homeschooling and school kids alike. There is a place for writing in their daily schedule, chores, morning and evening routines and tasks or goals for their week.
Schedule
The schedule starts at 5:00 am (I hope my kids are not up this early but I know each family is different and 5:00 am may just be the start for your kids day.) and ends at 9:00 pm.
Kids can write in their schedule for the day. Parents can fill in any activities you would like to have on your child schedule also.
Add in sports, music lessons or family outings to the schedule.
Chores
This space is for daily chores or weekly chores. My kids have daily and weekly chores so I have them write in their daily and weekly chore here. They are required to complete their chore before dinner time each day.
You could write the chore with a time next to it of when it needs to be completed. You could also write the chore and then add the chore to the schedule in the appropriate time block. This way there is no question about when the chore needs to be completed.
This is a great way to develop responsibility in your child and give them ownership of the task. It’s no fun to keep nagging and reminding our kids to complete a chore!
Routines
Here is a space for the everyday routines that you expect to happen without a reminder.
For example in the morning I would expect my kids to make their bed, get dressed, brush hair and brush teeth.
These are morning items that I would like to become routine. Maybe that is an area they struggle in so I would have them write this in the morning routine section. That way, they will see it and be reminded without the nagging from Mom or Dad.
An evening example could be cleaning up toys around the house or picking out the next day’s outfit.
Tasks & Goals
This is a fun section to get kids thinking outside the boxes of daily life. Here they can add in their own personal task or goal they would like to complete that day.
An example from my son was a goal to play Minecraft and build a house for Steve. My daughter wrote in a goal to complete one chapter book by the end of the week and a daily task of playing with her little sister.
