One of our favorite books to read in October is It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! By Laura Numeroff.
This is a cute and simple story about a mouse that has pumpkins to decorate. Mouse paints several different faces on his pumpkins. One of his pumpkins goes missing and to his surprise he finds that his friend Dog decorated one of the pumpkins. Then the two friends decorate pumpkins together and celebrate a Happy Pumpkin Day.
After reading the book, I gave my preschooler a simple and easy reusable pumpkin craft. She was able to create her own pumpkin faces just like Mouse and Dog using the Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkin Template.
Take a little time to prep this fun Jack-O-Lantern craft before reading pumpkin books to your preschooler. They will enjoy making lots of silly pumpkin faces!
Get access to the printable template in the Freebie Library by filling out the form below.
Two ways to use the Jack-O-Lantern Template
- Print it out on paper or card stock and cut the faces out for your preschooler to glue onto the pumpkin.
- Another option (which I did) is to make this a reusable activity. Print out the template and trace it onto orange and black felt pieces. Cut them out and then your kiddo can make different pumpkin faces over and over!
Materials Needed:
- Printer
- White card stock or white paper
- Orange felt
- Black felt
- Scissors
- Marker (for tracing)
- Plastic bag (to store pumpkin pieces)
Steps:
- Print out the template
- Cut out pieces
- Trace the template onto desired felt (Tip: Use a glue stick and adhere the paper template pieces to felt to prevent movement while you cut them out.)
- Cut felt pieces
- Place into a reusable plastic bag
You can use this craft along with many other fun pumpkin books. You can find many pumpkin books at your local library. Check out our favorite pumpkin books in the list below.
